Words of Wisdom

May 28, 2012

Some words of wisdom for the coming week from hyper-realist artist Chuck Close:

“The advice I like to give young artists, or really anybody who’ll listen to me, is not to wait around for inspiration. Inspiration is for amateurs; the rest of us just show up and get to work. If you wait around for the clouds to part and a bolt of lightning to strike you in the brain, you are not going to make an awful lot of work. All the best ideas come out of the process; they come out of the work itself. Things occur to you. If you’re sitting around trying to dream up a great art idea, you can sit there a long time before anything happens. But if you just get to work, something will occur to you and something else will occur to you and something else that you reject will push you in another direction. Inspiration is absolutely unnecessary and somehow deceptive. you feel like you need this great idea before you can get down to work, and I find that’s almost never the case.” - Chuck Close

So true!

Tilly Loves: Grimes

May 21, 2012

Meet Claire Boucher, aka Grimes. She’s quirky, smart and funny- as well as being the music industry’s latest obsession. Fortunately, she has got the talent to back it all up. Her music is haunting and her live shows manage to strike the perfect combination of weird, hypnotizing and cool. Check out her interview with Nylon magazine, and listen to her song “Vanessa”.

Marking Time

May 13, 2012

I went to the MCA on the weekend to have a look at the exhibition “Marking Time”. It features the work of 11 different local and international artists, all commenting on the transient nature of time- be it past, present or future. The actual exhibition was great, made up of photographs, paintings, light shows and installations (I LOVE a good installation piece!). It was also just cool to check out the new MCA building, which is looking slick and shiny. The exhibition runs till the 3rd of June. Highly recommended if you find yourself wandering around Circular Quay with an afternoon to kill!

Romy Ash

May 10, 2012

Romy Ash is a young writer from Melbourne. Her work has been published in Frankie magazine, Yen and the Big Issue, and she has just released her first novel to rave reviews. From what I have read of her work, I can tell she has a beautiful, simple way of communicating- and her narratives are filled with gorgeous descriptions of quintessentially Australian landscapes and experiences. I will be purchasing her novel, Floundering, this week!

FLOUNDERING

“Tom and Jordy live with their gran. Their mum, Loretta, left them on her doorstep. Now she wants her boys back. Tom and Jordy hit the road with Loretta in her beat-up car. They journey across the country, squabbling, bonding, searching and reconnecting. On the west coast they stop. They take refuge in a beachside caravan park where, at last, the reality of the situation sets in. And now the boys find they have new threats and new fears to face.”

GIRLS

May 8, 2012

HBO, the American television network known for their high-quality, independent productions, have just released their newest hit. “Girls” is set in New York City, and is sort of a younger version of  Sex and the City – minus all the glamorous parties and expensive cocktails. “Girls” follows the lives of a group of women in their early twenties, attempting to live (and survive) in one of the greatest cities in the world, all the while riding the wave of late-adolescent confusion and uncertainty. Four episodes have aired so far, and I find them to be wonderful, hilarious, and strangely accurate. Check out the trailer above.

9 Eyes

May 1, 2012

This is so cool. Artist Jon Rafman spent hours pouring through images captured on Google Street View. Amongst the thousands of standard images of roadways, countryside and suburban streets, there were some incredibly unique stand-outs.

These are all totally real. For more, visit his website.
